INSTRUCTIONAL
PROCEDURES
|
a)
The teacher begins the lesson by asking the students what they still remember
about simple past tense. The students are expected to say that past tense is
used to describe actions that have taken place.
b)
Then, the teacher draws a table on the board which divides tenses into
present tense and past tense. She fills in the present tense column with a
number of verbs. After that, she tells the students to change the present
tense verbs into past tense verbs. The students are expected to remember some
rules of converting present tense verbs into their past tense forms.
c)
Next, she tells them that they will use the past tense verbs to fill in
blanks. She writes the exercise on the board and gets them to take it down
into their exercise books.
d)
After that, she tells them to complete this on their own for about 10 minutes.
When they are done, she calls a few students to write down their answers on
the board.
e)
Before the lesson ends, she tells them that they will learn how to construct
simple sentences using simple past tense on Wednesday.
|
REFLECTION
|
This
lesson was completed but the teacher had to alter it due to the fact that the
students have forgotten how to change present tense verbs into their past
tense forms. The teacher had to revise 50 present tense verbs with them. The
students were made to take down all of these words and to revise them at
home. The lesson on Wednesday will be a quiz on this lesson.

INSTRUCTIONAL
PROCEDURES
|
a)
The teacher informs the students that they will be taught how to compose a
short essay of about 120 words during the lesson.
b)
She writes the question on the board and explains what note expansion means
by looking at the notes given for the essay.
c)
Next, she asks them if they have seen anyone drowning in the river or experienced
being drowning before. The students are expected to share their experiences
whether they have or have not done any of the situations. The teacher
encourages them to give words to describe reaction, behaviour, appearance,
emotion and the situation related to drowning in the river. She writes all of
these words on the board.
d)
Then, she moves on to the layout for the essay by getting the students to
identify with points go to a certain paragraph. She stresses on the
importance of organising their points so that they write a cohesive essay.
She also stresses on the usage of sequence connectors to sequence ideas in
the essay.
e)
After this, she tells them to write two or three sentences for the
introduction. They are to use points brainstormed on the board and gives them
5 minutes to do this on their own.
f)
At the end of this time, she reads four examples of introduction from the
students and comments on them. She highlights any examples that are more
interesting than the others.
g)
Next, to illustrate clearly what she means by writing a more interesting
introduction, she gives them a sample introduction on the board. She explains
how each sentence is related to the points for the introduction plus the more
interesting sentence structures.
h)
The rest of the time is for the students to work on the other three
paragraphs on their own. Before the class ends, this is assigned as homework
which the teacher will read in the class during Wednesday lesson.
|
REFLECTION
|
This
lesson was completed. The teacher found out that students have very little
exposure to writing a good introduction. They also have very little knowledge
of synonyms based on the brainstorming of ideas. The teacher had to supply
them with a lot of adjectives and verbs to help make their description more
interesting. This lesson will be continued on Wednesday as the teacher is
keen to read what they students have written at home.

The teacher tells the students to take out the essay that was assigned as
homework on the previous Tuesday. She selects a few essays in random to be
read in the class.
b)
After reading some of the students’ essays, the teacher comments on some of
the errors and shows how the errors can be corrected on the board.
c)
Next, the teacher gives them a sample essay to be taken down as a source of
reference for the students.
d)
Once this is done, the teacher assigns another note expansion exercise in
order to help the students write better short recounts.
e)
Then, she explains what they need to do by looking at the points and laying
out the paragraphs for them based on the storyline.
f)
The teacher also gets the students to brainstorm some interesting ideas for
the essay as well as vocabulary.
g)
Before the class ends, the teacher tells them to work on the introduction for
the essay for about 5 minutes. She also randomly reads a few examples from
the students and comments on their work. The students are also given a sample
introduction.
h)
Before the lesson ends, the teacher reminds the students to complete this
recount at home which the teacher will check during Friday lesson.
|
REFLECTION
|
This
lesson was partially completed. The teacher was only able to read three
essays in the class. She found out that students made errors in subject
verb-agreement and the usage of simple past as well as past continuous.
However, they were able to use all of the given notes and to write four
paragraphs. The teacher gave a sample essay which the students commented as
being quite advanced for their level. The second essay will only be attempted
during Friday class as most of the time was used in classroom discussion. The
teacher aims to use more sentences that use simple past and past continuous
tenses.

grammar quiz.
b)
She gives them 5 minutes to revise their previous notes on simple past tense.
c)
Then, the teacher writes sentences that require students to fill in blanks
and a table with the correct form of past tense verbs.
d)
After this, each team is to send some students to complete these exercises on
the board. Time is given for them to do this.
e)
At the end of the time, the teacher marks each team’s work. Scores are given
and rewards are also given away to the winning team.
|
REFLECTION
|
This
lesson was completed. However, the teacher has decided to modify the approach
of conducting the quiz. Instead of getting some students to answer questions
on the board, the teacher had decided to use actions which the students would
have to guess the correct verb and to change the present tense verbs into
their past tense forms. The girls had won again by scoring 20 over the boys’
17 marks. The reward will be given on Thursday.

The teach moves on to construction of simple sentences for the lesson by
teaching the students to use nouns, verbs and time to construct simple
sentences.
b) The teacher gives them a list of nouns,
verbs in the past tense forms, objects and time.
c)
She illustrates on the board how to construct the simple sentences by using
some words from this list. She shows to them how each word is strung to form
a meaningful sentence. This is done by filling in a table with columns that
will divide each word into different parts.
d)
Next, she invites some students to select the words to fill in the table to
create other meaningful simple sentences that use simple past tense.
e)
Once the students understand what to do, the teacher tells them to construct
5 more simple sentences on their own by utilizing the given list.
f)
At the end of individual work, she calls a few students to write their
sentences on the board. The teacher checks and comments.
g)
Before the end of the lesson, she reminds the students to bring their
exercise books for a lesson on writing short paragraphs using simple past
tense next week.
|
REFLECTION

This lesson was completed. The students could only do very few simple sentences. Hence, the teacher had to give them a lot of examples which the students copied into their books.
